Serbian Education for Roma Inclusion

The inclusion of ethnic minorities in the Serbian system of education is very challenging. In particular the Roma minority is far from being included. One of the significant reasons is the discriminatory behaviour of teachers. This research project tackles the question of how Serbian teacher education can effectively meet this challenge.

The inclusion of ethnic minorities in the Serbian system of education is very challenging. In particular the Roma minority is far from being included. One of the significant reasons is the discriminatory behaviour of teachers. This research project tackles the question of how Serbian teacher education can effectively meet this challenge.

Content and aim of the research project: To a considerable extent the basic setting and the teacher's opinions and attitudes shape how they envisage and execute their role as a teacher. If it is to be effective, pre-service and in-service teacher training should learn about and deal with these opinions and attitudes. However, documents dealing with the inclusion of ethnic minorities are not available. The project will help to close this gap in research. First, using a qualitative approach, it will establish the opinions and attitudes of teachers regarding ethnic minorities in Serbia, and show their connection to the development of intercultural sensitivity. Second, it will develop an assessment tool, using a quantitative approach to identify individual opinions and attitudes on the integration of ethnic minorities in Serbia. This tool is intended to help pre-service and in-service teacher training to adapt the contents of each type of teacher training to individual levels of development, so as to achieve optimal efficiency.

Scientific and societal context: The project meets the challenging inclusion of ethnic minorities in the Serbian system of education by providing the missing information needed to strengthen the efficiency of pre-service and in-service teacher training.
