What to do in the event of a death

Death at home as a result of illness

• Call a doctor
• If the usual doctor (GP) can't be reached, call the Emergency Doctor (Telephone 0900 008 008, liable to a charge).

Death following an accident or suicide

• Call the Police (Telephone 117). The Police must be called not only in the event of a traffic accident, but also for accidents at work, at home or other accidents.

Death in a hospital or care home

• Normally, the hospital or care home authorities will deal with the necessary formalities, including dealing with the undertakers to collect the deceased and arrange transportation to the mortuary.

Dealing with the municipal funeral authority

The death of a relative must be reported to the funeral authority of the local municipality within two days. 

This can be done by a relative or acquaintance. 

Please make an appointment in advance with the funeral authority (Tel. 041 784 44 10).

Please bring the following documents:

• Death certificate signed by a doctor if the death occurred at home;
• Family record book or family ID;
• If the deceased has left a will, a marriage and/or inheritance contract or instructions in the case of death/burial, these documents should be taken to the funeral authority;
• Foreign nationals lacking a Swiss family record book or family ID should take the marriage certificate, birth certificate, passport and foreign resident's permit of the deceased and that of the surviving spouse with them.

Preparing for the funeral

The transport, placing in a coffin and the lying-in-state are arranged by the funeral director.
