Crop rotation areas

Crop rotation areas

Crop rotation areas are agricultural land used primarily for arable farming. The crop rotation areas account for around 40% of the agricultural land (LN) in Switzerland. The LN is over 1'000'000 ha, so over 400'000 ha are in the crop rotation. The main crop in this crop rotation is grain with a 14% share. Cereals include wheat, barley, triticale, rye, spelt and oats.

A crop rotation is created to control the flow of cultivated crops. That is why, attention is paid to the following points:

  • Harvest and sowing time of successive crops
  • transmission of fungal diseases
  • Weed pressure and weed species
  • Outgrowth compatibility of the main culture in the subsequent culture

Here in the Chamau there are five fields, each with about five hectares in the crop rotation. This is planned as:
