Fruit production

Fruit consumption has increased steadily in recent years. So was the per capita consumption of fresh fruit in 2017 at around 85 kilograms. The most popular is the apple: the average person consumes 15 kilograms per year.

In Switzerland, apples are produced on an area of 3885 hectares. This corresponds to approximately 5441 football fields. The most popular apple varieties include:

  • Gala: Red marbled, low acidity and wonderfully sweet.
  • Golden Delicious: Green apple with a slightly acidic aroma.
  • Braeburn: Red apple, which is very juicy and sweet.
