Coping with Desertification Project (CODEP)

Education component to improve the effectiveness of national and international efforts to tackle desertification in Mongolia

The project aims to increase Mongolia's capacity to improve the effectiveness of national and international efforts to tackle desertification and promote sustainable livelihoods in arid and semi-arid areas. The education component focuses on:

  1. The promotion of eco-schools
  2. Raising public awareness about desertification
  3. The development of an Environmental Encyclopaedia

The IZB supports CODEP/SDC in its efforts to establish eco-schools. These make students from rural areas aware of the need for sus¬tainable development, and provide them with the competences necessary to make use of technologies and techniques that reduce the progress of desertification once they enter the world of work. Tasks include:

  • Updating the existing eco-school concept in Mongolia
  • Elaborating the CODEP eco-school strategy, 2012/16
  • Capacity building for the NGOs who work with eco-schools and for local teachers
  • Helping the eco-school network become a nationwide movement
  • Providing inputs and recommendations to the experts' team working on the preparation of learning materials on desertification
  • Advising on how to make available a wider range of tools for public awareness
