«Humanity can be learned»: With this idea as the guiding principle, the Institute for International Cooperation in Education (IZB) developed «Project Humanity», an innovative school project and e-learning platform for secondary schools on the subject of humanitarian principles. The project originated on behalf of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) with the support of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The foundation éducation21 was involved in an advisory role and included «Project Humanity» in its list of project recommendations for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).

It all started with a school project for high schools in Switzerland. Since then, «Project Humanity» has been piloted in different formal and non-formal education programmes in Burundi, Lebanon, Rwanda, Serbia, Zimbabwe and Zambia. Within these pilot projects, education specialists from Save the Children and Red Cross/Red Crescent Organizations developed context-specific versions of the school project for their respective target groups.

Visit the online platform and download the five modules for free. The modules are ready for implementation in your class or youth group. The modules are available in German, English, French, Italian and Spanish. For the Arabic version, contact: info@izb.ch

IZB developed and carried out in-service trainings in order to prepare teachers and education specialists in different settings to implement the specific pedagogical approaches in «Project Humanity» such as discussion-based teaching, value-based education and opinion building.

Out of the manifold experiences in these short-term trainings, IZB developed a Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) in «Pedagogical Approaches for Humanitarian Principles and Values» in English. In 2019, 18 students from eleven different countries graduated successfully.

Based on the lessons learned, a second edition conceptualized as a «Diploma of Advanced Studies» (DAS) will start in spring 2021.
