SNF impact study on the effectiveness of mathematics teaching
In collaboration with the University of Bern (Department of Economics) and the NGO Consciente in El Salvador, the SNF research project QUEST, led by Prof. Dr. Aymo Brunetti, aims to generate knowledge on the design of effective in-service training programmes for mathematics teachers in order to improve student learning outcomes. To this end, three CPD intervention units (pedagogical knowledge, content knowledge, and pedagogical content knowledge, a combination of both inputs) are being developed and evaluated.
The IZB is involved in the development of the learning materials in collaboration with Kurt Hess, Professor of Mathematical Thinking and Learning at the PH Zug, and acts at various interfaces of the research project. Special emphasis is placed on taking into account the perspective(s) of all stakeholders involved in the project, and in particular the continuous exchange with Consciente seems indispensable for the success of the research project. The NGO's experience in the field of (critical) education, their understanding of the local school context, learning materials and infrastructure, ensure that the learning materials are coherent to the social reality of El Salvador.
