SoMeGas
The term "SoMeGa" was coined by the English team of PH Zug and stands for Social Media Users, Gamers & Co. They were "discovered" during the research which Nikolina Stanic of PH Zug conducted during the "Rektoratsfondsprojekt" 1 of PH Zug (Nov. 21 - Oct. 23)
Many of these SoMeGas are already fluent in English even before they start their English lessons at primary school, even though they do not speak any English at home. Their high competencies in English are due to their frequent contact with social media and computer games.
As their number is growing fast, the PH Zug is developing material also for this group of learners, in addition to catering for the English native speakers.
Rektoratsfondsprojekt 2 of PH Zug (May 2025 - July 2026)
As part of a project funded by the "Rektoratsfonds" of the PH Zug, we will be researching the phenomenon of these Social Media Users, Gamers & Co. (SoMeGas) from May 2025 to the end of July 2026. The aim is to gain a better understanding of SoMeGas as a new group of learners, make their linguistic potential in English lessons more visible, and outline concrete didactic implications for dealing with and supporting SoMeGas in the classroom.
